Last month a popup showed on my Windows 10 PC saying my PC was at risk and to call Microsoft support right away. I got scared and called the number. A girl named Abigail answered, said she was from Microsoft, told me a virus got in and could harm my PC and steal my private info. She wanted me to install antivirus — when I said I had my own, she said no and sent a link for some random antivirus. I hung up, searched online, found out it was a scam. Thank God I didn’t share anything.
My question is — how did that popup even get on my PC? Did they already have access to my computer? How do I protect my private info and bank info?

same thing happened to me man. got that popup on my windows 10 scared me pretty bad. so i called the number. guy answered said his name was michael from microsoft support. told me my pc had a virus and he needed to install anydesk so he could fix it. thats when i got suspicious and hung up.
after that i searched online and found out it was a scam. from what i understand that popup is just a fake ad. they werent already inside my pc.
if you didnt install anything or give them access then i think your bank and private info should be fine. id still run a windows defender scan and check your bank just for peace of mind.
and i think abigail and michael were probably fake names. these scammers use common names to sound more convincing.
you did the right thing hanging up. i did the same.

i dont have this problem cuz i dont use windows. had so many probelms with windows over the years, felt like it got hacked easy. switched to macbook and been using it for years now, never faced this kind of thing. not once.
and i think these scammers mostly run microsoft scams anyway. you dont really hear about apple ones like this. just my opinoin tho.
so my advice, get a macbook. save yourself the headache.

i get what your saying but i dont think thats right man. scammers target apple users just as much as microsoft. fake popups, phishing emails about your apple id, fake support calls. same tricks. i use both macbook and windows and honestly never had issues on either cuz i follow basic stuff, keep privacy settings on, use good software, dont click random links. i think scammers mostly target people who dont know much about tech, not a specific brand. just my 2 cents tho.

hey man just jumping in here. tbh you’re both kinda right lol. scammers go after both apple and microsoft, and yeah some brands probs get hit more, thats just how it feels. but we all use both anyway so whats the argument even 😄
no hard feelings man, we’re all human and people make mistakes. all good 🙏

You’re safe man, dont worry. 😄 These scammers just make you afraid so you panic and call them. They don’t have access to your PC — a popup is just a webpage yelling at you.
You didn’t click, didn’t call, didn’t share anything — so nothing stolen, you’re fine.
Just run a good antivirus scan (Windows Security or Malwarebytes), restart your PC, and you’re good. If you still feel scared, talk to Microsoft support — if they say the same words, it’ll relieve you. We’re all human, we make mistakes, it’s okay to ask.
Relax, take a breath. You handled it right. 🙏
